Ancient Healing in Egypt

The ancient Egyptians believed that good health depended on a delicate interplay between the physical and the divine. Pioneers in holistic health practices they combined natural medicine with spirituality to restore healthy balance. In her lecture, "Ancient Healing in Egypt." Egyptologist Noha Aly describes their approach to health and well-being through an exploration of healing gods, dietary expertise, physical exercises, and therapeutic oils.

The Divine Foundations of Ancient Healing

Deities were believed to preside over illness and recovery. Patients sought treatment from priests, healers and scribes who treated them with medicinal remedies, prayers and rituals. Food was considered to be medicine and diet was curated carefully to promote health and prevent disease.

Noha examines the role of diet, highlighting how the people of this civilization used food to maintain balance and vitality. Physical activity was another important component of ancient healing in Egypt. Exercise was seen as being absolutely essential to maintain a healthy body and mind. Depictions of stretches and poses in temple art show exercises that enhanced flexibility and improved circulation. Movements performed during religious ceremonies were also performed as a means to promote cosmic balance

Sacred Oils as Magical Tools and Their Role in Ancient Healing

One of the most fascinating aspects of ancient healing in Egypt is their use of therapeutic oils. Valued for their physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits, oils were used in many ways, but in particular for anointing. Considered a divine practice, anointing purified the body to align the anointed with the gods. Preparation of sacred oils was intricate. Those involved in their preparation were skilled in both medical expertise as well as sacred ritual.
